Day Trips from Amman: Best Excursions Within 2 Hours

Amman's hills are a blur of beige as we climb into the car, the call to prayer echoing from a nearby mosque. We're heading north on the Desert Highway, and within twenty minutes, the city's congestion gives way to a landscape of rocky wadis and olive groves. This is the beauty of Jordan: from the capital, you can reach Roman ruins, desert castles, and the lowest point on Earth in under two hours. Over the years, I've taken countless day trips from Amman, and these are the ones I keep coming back to.

Jerash: The Rome of the East

Forty-five minutes north of Amman, Jerash is the largest and best-preserved Roman city in the Middle East. Walking through Hadrian's Arch, you half expect a chariot to come rattling by. The Oval Plaza is massive—maybe 90 meters long—and the colonnaded street stretches out like a runway. I always head to the Temple of Artemis first, where the acoustics are so perfect you can hear a whisper from the far corner. Time your visit for the Jerash Festival in July, when the ruins host concerts and dance performances. Otherwise, go early to beat the heat and the tour buses.

Practical Tips for Jerash

  • Getting there: Take a taxi (around 25 JD round trip) or join a tour. Public buses are cheap but slow.
  • Best time: Spring (March-May) or autumn (September-November). Summers are scorching.
  • Don't miss: The Hippodrome, where you can watch reenacted chariot races (check schedule).

The Dead Sea: Float in the Lowest Point on Earth

An hour's drive west of Amman, the Dead Sea is a surreal experience. The water is so salty you can't sink—you just bob like a cork. I recommend spending the day at a hotel beach resort (like the Movenpick or Kempinski) where you can access showers and pools. The public beaches are fine but crowded. Slather on the mud, let it dry, then rinse off—your skin will feel like silk for days. Just don't get the water in your eyes; it stings like hell.

Where to Go Near Amman

For a quieter experience, head to Amman Beach (not the hotel) or O Beach. And remember, the Dead Sea is shrinking—visit sooner rather than later.

Madaba and Mount Nebo: Mosaics and Views

Thirty minutes south of Amman, Madaba is famous for its 6th-century mosaic map of the Holy Land in St. George's Church. The map is intricate, with 2 million pieces, and if you squint, you can make out Jerusalem and the Jordan River. From there, it's a short drive to Mount Nebo, where Moses is said to have seen the Promised Land. On a clear day, you can see the Dead Sea, Jericho, and even Jerusalem on the horizon. It's a spiritual spot, regardless of your faith.

Local Flavors

Stop at Haret Jdoudna in Madaba for a traditional Jordanian meal. The maqluba (upside-down rice and chicken) is legendary.

Desert Castles: Qusayr Amra and More

East of Amman, the desert stretches out to Iraq and Saudi Arabia. Scattered across this landscape are the desert castles—Umayyad palaces and hunting lodges from the 8th century. Qusayr Amra is the standout, a UNESCO site with frescoes of naked women and zodiac signs. It's a odd, wonderful place. The drive itself is part of the adventure: you'll pass Bedouin tents and camels. Pack a picnic; there's nowhere to eat out there.

Wadi Mujib: Adventure Near Amman

An hour and a half from Amman, Wadi Mujib is a slot canyon that leads to the Dead Sea. The Siq Trail is a wet, wild hike—you'll wade through water, climb over boulders, and get thoroughly soaked. It's open from April to October. Bring water shoes and a waterproof bag for your phone.

Practical Advice for Day Trips from Amman

  • Car rental: Best for flexibility. Roads are good, but drivers are aggressive.
  • Taxis: Negotiate a day rate (around 50-70 JD) before you set off.
  • Currency: Jordanian dinar (JD). Bring cash for smaller sites.
  • Dress: Modest clothing for religious sites; swimwear for the Dead Sea.

Whether you're history buff or adventure seeker, the excursions from Amman are varied and rewarding. And the best part? You'll be back in the city in time for a falafel sandwich and a cup of mint tea.
